Curriculum

Physical Education

Our PE curriculum aims to inspire students to become physically confident and build resilience so that each student is equipped to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. We aim to provide opportunities to compete in competitive sport both in and out of lessons, building on the key characteristics of the school, such as respect, resilience, equality, community, kindness and integrity.


Key Stage 3

Students will build on the knowledge and experience they have developed in Key Stages 1 and 2 so that they are able to understand and apply the key fundamentals in a variety of sports. Students will be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities within the PE department so that they can continue sport in their own free time; therefore, beginning a lifelong experience of physical activity.


Year 7

Students will be baseline assessed at the start of the academic year, from which they will be grouped accordingly. Students will have two lessons per week; one PE lesson and one Games lesson. PE lessons will consist of activities such as Climbing, Trampolining, Fitness, Gymnastics, Dance and Athletics. Games lessons will consist of activities such as Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Rugby, Football, Badminton, Tennis, Cricket, Rounders.


Year 8

Students will continue to receive the same duration of lesson time and range of activities as in Year 7 and they will begin to take on more leadership roles within lessons, such as coaching and officiating. Students will now have more knowledge about what makes a performance effective and be able to apply this to their own work.


Year 9

Students will continue to receive the same duration of lesson time and range of activities as in Year 7 and 8. They will also take on more significant leadership roles, such as leading elements of a lesson, for example a warm-up or drills. Students will be exposed to theoretical concepts of Physical Education, such as elements of the musculoskeletal system and cardiorespiratory system.


Enrichment 

As a department we pride ourselves on the enrichment opportunities we offer. Each year group will have one after school practise per week that will run from 3pm-4pm. We also have sports teams that represent the school in all major sports, competing both locally, regionally and nationally

Key Stage 4 - Core PE

Students will build on the skill, tactics and concepts they have developed in Key Stage 3 through similar activities such as Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Rugby, Football, Badminton, Tennis, Cricket, Rounders and Athletics.  Students will also be introduced to new activities such as Volleyball, Handball and Lacrosse. Students will tackle more complex skills and tactics, and explore these in a range of roles, such as player, coach and official. 


Year 10

Students will receive three lessons per fortnight, two Games lessons and one PE lesson.  The Games lessons will follow a set curriculum with prescribed activities. The PE lesson will be an ‘option’ choice, where the students choose the activity they wish to take part in. 


Year 11

Students will receive three lessons per fortnight, both of which will be ‘option’ choices. Students can therefore specialise in an activity and/or try sports which are new to them. 


Key Stage 4 – GCSE PE

The Physical Education GCSE consists of four components: 

Component 1: Fitness and Body Systems - In this component, students study 4 key topics; applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training and the use of data. 

Component 2: Health and Performance - In this component, students study 4 key topics; health, fitness and wellbeing, sport psychology, socio-cultural influences and the use of data. 

Component 3: Practical Performance - in this non-examined component students are assessed on   

skills during individual and team activities and their general performance skills. 

Component 4: Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) - in this component students produce and carry out their own personal exercise programme which consists of a clear aim and planning analysis, the carrying out and monitoring of their PEP and a detailed evaluation.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport. 

The course will help students to develop a detailed insight into physiology, fitness training, performance analysis and its impact on you as a performer, you will also spend time planning a career for yourself within the sport sector. The course consists of 4 units over 2 years: 

  • Anatomy and Physiology: The unit is exam based and covers 5 body systems and includes how they work and the short- and long-term impact exercise has on these systems. The systems are as follows - Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Energy Systems.  
  • Practical Sports Performance: This unit will be coursework and looks at the students' knowledge and practical ability in one team and one individual sport. It will focus on skills, techniques, and tactics, as well as reflecting on your own performance in comparison to that of an elite performer. Knowledge of rule and regulations will also be part of the coursework.  
  • Professional Development in the Sports Industry: This unit will be coursework and helps the students to plan for a career in sport. Helping them to structure the next 10 years considering grades needed to access university, where they want to study, along with what extras they need to help them gain the job they desire. This unit also gives the students chance to be interviewed, which will then be analysed by them and their peers.  
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being: This unit is assessed through an exam based around a fitness client, assessing their lifestyle and nutritional intake, making judgements and modifications that will enable the client to live a healthier lifestyle. Knowledge of various forms of training and client screening will enable a student to be successful in this unit.  

Enrichment – takes place on a Wednesday period 5. This involves recreational sport and fixtures throughout the whole academic year.  Inter tutor and house competitions will take place during this time.
